Natural colorant spirulina

With KoRo you will experience a blue miracle! Thanks to the tasteless spirulina powder, you can color your dishes blue and create a very special effect. Here we tell you what spirulina actually is and in which dishes it is particularly effective.

Natural colorant spirulina

What is spirulina?

Spirulina, also known as Arthrospira platensis, is a tiny blue-green freshwater microalgae found in the alkaline waters of Mexico, Asia and South America. The algae originated around 3.5 billion years ago and is one of the oldest organisms in the world. Spirulina has a long tradition as a food and was once harvested by the Aztecs from Lake Texcoco, which is now almost dried up in the valley of present-day Mexico City.

The Aztecs already appreciated the diverse microalgae back then: They incorporated the dried spirulina algae into soups and cakes.

Our dried spirulina powder is extracted from the blue-green microalgae. After harvesting, the freshwater algae are dried and ground into powder. It is high in protein with 45 g protein per 100 g and is also vegan. But note: You should not heat your dishes with blue spirulina powder above 70 degrees, because then the color loses its glow.

If you don't like the blue color or are looking for a higher protein source: With a whopping 62 g of protein per 100 g, you can add even more protein to your diet with our green organic spirulina powder.

KoRo tip: In addition to spirulina, there is also the freshwater algae chlorella, which is often used as a dietary supplement. For example in our organic chlorella tablets.
