Our vanilla cashews with tonka contain only ingredients that naturally do not contain gluten. Nevertheless, depending on the growing region, unknowingly contamination with gluten-containing grains may occur during harvesting or processing. We therefore do not declare the cashews as gluten-free.

What is the taste of tonka bean?

In terms of taste, the tonka bean is initially reminiscent of vanilla, however, it also brings a hint of caramel and bitter almond. You do not need much of the dried bean, as its flavor is incredibly intense even in small doses.

Is the tonka bean poisonous?

Tonka beans contain coumarin, which should only be consumed in small amounts. According to the European Food Safety Authority, the maximum daily amount that can be safely consumed per kilo of body weight is 0.1 mg. On average, 1-3% of a tonka bean consists of coumarin. Our cashews contain 0.1 g of tonka bean per 100 g and thus a maximum of 3 mg of coumarin.  However, the coumarin content decreases even further when the bean is dried. Thus, the minimal coumarin contained absolutely does not speak against the consumption of our sweet cashews, as long as this is done in moderation.
