Why is the peanut called peanut?

Did you know that, botanically speaking, peanuts are not even considered nuts, but legumes? The peanut was originally called "ground nut" or ground pea" because it grows underground; the English even nicknamed it "monkey nut", because monkeys in the zoo would eat them by the cartful. Eventually, the name peanut settled, simply because the size of a peanut is close to pea size. When peanuts are harvested, they are taken out of the ground and dried. We then roasted them in canola oil and added a touch of salt: the treat of all treats is ready for you to enjoy!
